This Spanish treatise from the 19th century addresses the law of storms and variable winds, vital for practical navigation. Originally written in English by W. Reid and translated by the Navy brigadier D. Juan Nepomuceno de Vizcarrondo. Published in 1853, the book is bound in leather with gold details on the spine. It contains fold-out maps illustrating maritime routes and meteorological phenomena. The text is in Spanish, aimed at navigators and scholars of the time. It presents a good state of preservation, with wear consistent with its age.

Object history
Imprenta, Librería y Litografía de la Revista Médica, under the direction of D. Juan Bautista de Gaona. Cádiz, 1853. The Treatise begins with a general explanation of the law governing storms, followed by reflections from Mr. Redfield on the large oscillations of the barometer. Later, in successive chapters, it explains how to navigate and weather storms. It then describes how storms develop simultaneously on opposite sides of the Equator, in the Bay of Bengal, in the Arabian Sea; typhoons in the China Sea and tropical storms in the southern hemisphere; storms in Madeira and the Mediterranean, northerly winds in the Mexican Gulf, and storms in the northern hemisphere. An interesting chapter is dedicated to observations made in Bermuda with tables to deduce the state of the weather using the barometer. A fundamental work for transoceanic navigators from the mid to late 19th century, enjoying wide popularity among sailors. Even, in the absence of more comprehensive treatises, it continued to be used until the early 20th century (c. 1920) when it fell out of use. Major advances in meteorological research and the use of the telegraph in nautical communications allowed for daily weather information and reports that enabled a more reliable tracking of storm evolution. Palau. Ref. 256563. Many illustrations in text and folded plates. Full leather binding. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. This book is a fundamental work for the history of nautical meteorology in Spain. It is the Spanish translation of the famous treatise by William Reid (The Law of Storms), carried out by Juan Nepomuceno de Vizcarrondo and published in Cádiz in 1854. With the fold-out plates, geographical maps, and wind diagrams. Well-preserved leather but worn and soiled. Historical context and importance. The original author: William Reid was one of the pioneers in describing the circular nature of hurricanes. The translator: Juan Nepomuceno de Vizcarrondo was a prominent Spanish sailor and scientist, brigadier of the Navy, who saw the need to bring this knowledge to Spanish-speaking navigators to prevent shipwrecks. Content: The book teaches captains how to maneuver when encountering a cyclone or storm based on wind direction and barometric pressure, based on the "rotary theory."
