Pietro da Cortona belongs to the early Baroque period. He is primarily known for his work in decorative frescoes and painting. During the papacy of Urban VIII (of whom he made a portrait), he was one of the leading artists established in Rome, alongside Bernini and Borromini. It can be said that he represents the pinnacle of decorative Baroque art, overshadowing earlier artists such as Giovanni da San Giovanni and eclipsing competitors like Giovanni Lanfranco.
