Oil on canvas from the 19th century by David Payne, a renowned painter of rural landscapes. The work depicts a pastoral landscape with sheep, characteristic of Payne's style. The frame features ornamental golden details. David Payne's signature is visible at the bottom of the canvas. The painting has likely been exhibited at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and at the Nottingham Museum. The painting is well preserved with original patina.
Object history
Payne was born in Annan, in the former county of Dumfriesshire, and was educated at the Annan Academy. He moved to Derby in 1869 and lived in Derbyshire during the 1880s. He exhibited at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and was a member of the Royal Scottish Academy.
