Oil on canvas titled 'The Marriage of the Virgin' by Matías de Arteaga y Alfaro. The work represents a religious scene with a group of figures in a detailed architectural setting. The characters are richly dressed, reflecting the Baroque style of the time. The use of color and light highlights the solemnity of the moment depicted. The composition centralizes the joining of hands, symbolizing the ceremony. The canvas shows signs of aging but maintains its structural integrity.
Object history
Matías de Arteaga y Alfaro (Villanueva de los Infantes, 1633-Sevilla, 1703) was a Spanish Baroque painter and engraver, associated with the Sevillian school, who was able to capture in his painting and interpret with his own personality the dual influence of Murillo and Valdés Leal.

Born in Villanueva de los Infantes (Ciudad Real), he was the son of Bartolomé de Arteaga, known for engravings made with some precision, including the coat of arms of the Count-Duke of Olivares published in the Panegyric of Poetry, by Hernando de Vera (Montilla, 1627) and possibly the prints of the Brief Compendium of White Carpentry (Sevilla, 1633) by Diego López de Arenas, with a portrait of the author signed Artiaga in 1632. At a young age, the family moved to Sevilla, where he would train in his father's workshop and in contact with Murillo, whose influence is revealed in his early work. Another notable influence in his painting is that of Valdés Leal.
