Through his painter friend Veillet, Luce became acquainted with Rolleboise, located between Bonnières and Mantes, in 1917 and immediately fell in love with the picturesque village nestled among the hills and vineyards above the Seine. Initially, he rented a room. In 1920, he purchased the small house below the church. Until his death, he painted the village, the surrounding area, and, time and again, the Seine in a magnificent, mature, colorful, and impressionistic late style. He dedicated this autumnal evening scene on the Seine, with its magnificent, flowing colors, to his friend, the English-Belgian post-impressionist and pointillist, Alfred William (Willy) Finch.
