Through his painter friend Veillet, Luce discovers Rolleboise, located between Bonnières and Mantes, in 1917 and immediately falls in love with the picturesque village in the hills and vineyards above the Seine. Initially, he rents a room. In 1920, he acquires the small house below the church. Until his death, he paints the village, the area, and repeatedly the Seine in a magnificent, mature, colorful, impressionistic late style. The present autumn evening mood on the Seine in grand, flowing colors was dedicated to his friend, the English-Belgian post-impressionist and pointillist, Alfred William (Willy) Finch.
