Louis Dominique Lamontagne was born in 1874 in Nevers and moved to Toulon in 1911 for health reasons. With a diploma from the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he was appointed as a professor at the École supérieure d’art et de design Toulon Provence Méditerranée, founded in 1899.

His preferred subjects, in addition to the port of Toulon, are the surrounding coastal landscapes. Due to the brilliance of colors and original compositions of his paintings and watercolors, he is rightly considered one of the best Toulon painters of the early 20th century. He remained loyal to the region throughout his life, which is why his works rarely find their way to the international art market today.

The present watercolor perfectly captures the light and vegetation of the South and stylistically recalls the works of Corot.
