Louis Dominique Lamontagne was born in Nevers in 1874 and moved to Toulon in 1911 for health reasons. With a diploma from the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under his belt, he was appointed professor at the École supérieure d'art et de design Toulon Provence Méditerranée, founded in 1899.

His favourite motifs, apart from the port of Toulon, are the surrounding coastal landscapes. Due to the colourfulness and original compositions of his paintings and watercolours, he is rightly considered one of the best Toulon painters of the early 20th century. He remained loyal to the region throughout his life, which is why his works rarely find their way onto the international art market.

This watercolour perfectly captures the light and vegetation of the south and is stylistically reminiscent of Corot's works.
