Magnificent double door from the 19th century, originating from the northwest of the Indian subcontinent, probably from the Rajasthan region or the cultural surroundings of New Delhi.
Made of solid wood, most likely antique teak, it features a geometric relief composition influenced by Indo-Islamic design, organized in rhythmic patterns and reinforced with abundant original wrought iron fastenings. The structure is solid, balanced, and has a strong vertical presence.
It retains its historical patina, natural wear consistent with its age, and original hardware. The proportion and density of the whole give it a sober and monumental architectural presence.
Object history
This door was part of a large traditional house in northern India during the 19th century, in a region located in the northwest of the subcontinent, probably Rajasthan or the culturally adjacent area to New Delhi.
In that context, doors were not merely functional elements: they represented the transition between public space and private domain, symbolizing protection, family prestige, and generational continuity. Their scale and ornamentation indicated the social position of the residence and the importance of the lineage inhabiting it.
In the late 20th century, around the year 2000, the piece was acquired in India by a merchant specializing in textiles and decorative arts from South Asia, who imported it to Spain as part of a selection of unique architectural elements. Since then, it has remained in private collection.
In a broader context, this type of door reflects the cultural synthesis characteristic of northern India, where Hindu construction traditions dialogued for centuries with Islamic aesthetics, resulting in geometrical compositions of great sophistication and formal balance.
