This door was part of a large traditional house in northern India during the 19th century, in a region located in the northwest of the subcontinent, probably Rajasthan or the cultural area near New Delhi.
In this context, the main door constituted a symbolic element of protection, family prestige, and generational continuity. Its structural robustness and the richness of its joinery reflected the social position of the owning family and their desire for permanence.
During the 19th century, domestic architecture in northern India integrated solid doors reinforced with iron as an essential part of the construction system. Indo-Islamic influence is manifested in the geometric organization of the panels and in the use of circular metal plates that served both structural and ornamental functions.
Around the year 2000, the piece was acquired in India by a merchant specialized in textiles and decorative arts from South Asia, who imported it to Spain as part of a selection of unique architectural elements. Since then, it has remained in a private collection.
