Exceptional double Indian door from the 19th century, originating from the northwest of the Indian subcontinent, likely from the Rajasthan region, with a formal affinity to the areas of Shekhawati or Marwar.
Made of solid wood —most likely antique teak— it features a deep composition of square relief panels, organized in a structured grid and reinforced with abundant original wrought iron nails. Each panel incorporates circular metal applications in the form of bossage, generating a rhythmic surface of great visual power.
The central axis is articulated by a sculpturally carved post that unifies both leaves and reinforces their architectural presence. It retains its traditional hardware, including original ringed handles.
It maintains its historical patina and wear consistent with its age. It has undergone minor interventions in details, carried out with respect for the original material and fully integrated into the whole. The structure is in excellent condition.
A piece of strong material density and marked monumental presence.
Object history
This door was part of a large traditional house or haveli in northern India during the 19th century, in a region located in the northwest of the subcontinent, most likely Rajasthan, within the cultural sphere of Shekhawati or Marwar.
In the domestic architecture of these regions, the main door constituted the most significant element of the facade. It not only served a structural and defensive function —through the use of wrought iron and metal plates— but also symbolized status, protection, and family permanence.
The havelis, residences of merchants and affluent families, incorporated robust and elaborate doors as a visible declaration of prestige. The geometric repetition in grid form and the combination of hardwood with iron respond to construction traditions developed over centuries in dialogue between Hindu and Islamic influences.
Around the year 2000, the piece was acquired in India by a dealer specialized in textiles and decorative arts from South Asia, and was subsequently imported to Spain as part of a selection of unique architectural elements. Since then, it has remained in a private collection.
