Description

Terracotta group with female faun, tambourine and two faun children

by Clodion with beautiful patina

44cm high, base diameter 28 cm

Marked on the reverse: CLODION

Clodion, actually Claude Michel (1738 in Nancy – 1814 in Paris), was a French sculptor. He is considered an important representative of French Louis-seize sculpture. He lived in Rome from 1762 to 1771 and worked for the Duke de La Rochefoucauld and for Catherine the Great, who tried in vain to persuade him to move to Russia. Instead, he was drawn to Paris.

In addition to official commissions, Clodion produced sculptures for private collectors, including numerous fauns, nymphs, satyrs, putti and graceful girls, as well as fine vases, clocks, arm candlesticks and candelabras. He favoured working in marble and terracotta.
